Ethan Gibson - Weekly Update #8

The past week was an interesting one. We started with being absolutely stuck on the image processing using Xamarin and spent multiple days just researching and trying to find out how to use the camera and how to access the frame buffer. During out meetings, we all tried to find different ways to solve the problem. I walked through some sample apps provided by Xamarin that included camera access, and was hit with the reality that we may not be able to get the image processing done because their documentation was so lacking and there samples nearly all included deprecated code. We made the big decision last Thursday to try something different. Ryan would continue trying to get the Xamarin app working; I was going to try to get a sample app with camera access and light recognition written in Swift (which I had never used before), and Katie was going to do the same in Java. We knew that hopefully one of us would end up with a working app by the next week and we could proceed from there. Thursday night I stayed up until 5AM Friday, but had successfully gotten the image processing to work. Friday, Ryan and I spent the majority of the day converting all the functionality that we had implemented in C# into Swift. By the end of Friday we had a nearly functional app, with only a small amount of tweaking left to finish it.
